During a visit with my parents, some 15 years after I left the small village of my childhood home, I discovered there the loneliness and desolation that one feels at night. No sound, no people, no cars. Have no fear! The countyside of West-Germany — not rich, not poor and well known for its collective soberness — my German nightmare: I am fascinated by its stillness and regularity and the apparent agreement of distance between the onlooker and the houses. On the other hand the fearfulness and bleakness oppress me. I asked myself how this environment and the people have influenced me. During this project I often had to stop my nightly excursions because an uncertain fear came over me, which crawled into bed with me.
