The Last Road North

The Arctic can be cold, yet for a few months, it exists within a glorious wash of never ending light, warmth and life. Summers in the Arctic are magical, but from the beginning I have been drawn to the cold. The stark absence of comfort. Making photographs in the dark, and cold, of a silent world is a gift. My senses are challenged with the need to find focus in an environment that demands attention. It is difficult to imagine a life so still, a life so perfect, yet so dangerous. The haul road acts as a meditation for me. I escape by means of repeatedly driving atop a dirt scar that cuts through the Arctic. In this dark, this cold, and snow, I have, over time, found comfort .
