My friend Dodo was a part of everything I had and did during my years in Spain. We were family. After 3 unbearable months with a pneumatic drill and a lost sense of freedom he decided to become a human mule. He consumed 75 hashish balls and successfully crossed the border to Spain. In the last conversation we had, he told me his desire to go back to the Rif mountains one day, just to enjoy the place and take some photos. He died shortly after, alone, in Barcelona. I decided to retrace his steps and take those photos.
Hashish grown on the Rif mountains in Northern Morocco is the source for most of the hashish supplies found across Europe. Known locally as Kif, the illicit crop is the region’s most successful export, supporting an estimated 90,000 families.
