The Last Farmgirls

The Dutch countryside is changing. Farms are vanishing rapidly and with them the farm girls. There has always been a divide between townspeople and countrymen. The existence of this divide became tangible to me, a farmgirl myself, when I moved to a town. Since then I neither truly belong in the country nor in the city. The melancholy of this conflict is what I want to show in these portraits.

My photography primarily consists of documentary series in the form of portraits. To me people are an endless source of inspiration and subject choice. My topics arise from my own social interests and personal recognition. My photography is often about the vulnerability of the individual in our society. Besides that transience, loss and farewell are topics in my work. I have the urge to record things that are in danger of disappearing. Within these topics I look for authenticity and intimacy, the moment of connection.
