Photography exists by virtue of light, but the landscapes in the work of Awoiska van der Molen ( born 1972 Groningen, NL) loom out of the darkness. Her photographic works arise out of a desire to penetrate deeply into the core of the secluded world in which she photographs. The geographic isolation of islands or mountain regions were she makes her works contributes to the mental isolation Van der Molen needs in order to, as she says, ‘gain access to the mysterious territory of the landscape’.
This search for the abiding core has been a motif running through all her photographic work. The seclusion that she brings to making photographs is continued in the dark-room where the large format silver gelatines are hand printed.
