Project Pressure

Project Pressure was instigated by Klaus Thymann in 2008, and is now a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to creating the world’s first open source glacier archive. The principal goal is to document the world’s changing glaciers, and to record first-hand the environmental impact of climate change. The organisation has official links with the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), amongst others and is an contributor to the Global Terrestrial Network for Glaciers (GTN-G).

During the next decade many glaciers will retreat or disappear. Documenting these changing glaciers will provide future generations with a visual archive of the way the world was, and underscore the importance of preserving the balance of the world’s ecosystem. The next phase of the project will see the creation of ‘MELT’ – a digital platform which enables adventurers, scientists and members of the public to upload their own photos, allowing year-on-year comparisons of glacier change.

The project is supported by Arts Council England, UNESCO, the Queen of Denmark, Lighthouse Foundation, Phase One, super/collider and Rab.
