Cannery Workers

In 2007 I moved from New York City to Dutch Harbor, Alaska to work on the project Cannery Workers. I got a job in one of the fish canneries working the slime line. I figured the only way to gain access to the workers was to actually work along side them. Between our 12 hour shifts, I would make portraits of my fellow workers. This body of work taught me some important career lessons that I still value today. First, a body of work doesn’t come together in a day, week or even a month. Second, if you have good intentions, people will open themselves to you and allow you to photograph them. Third, always send people prints when they email you. It gives all of us photographers a good name.
