A particular English cast of transvestites, pole dancers, wrestlers… and the landscape along the Bristol Channel coast.
Part of the role as a photographer is to give the ordinary and overlooked their rightful attention, and some of the most interesting people can be found in the most unlikely of places. The more specific you are, the more general it can be.
Started in 2013 the on-going series Love Bites is based on a stretch of coast along the Bristol Channel in the west of England. The out-of-season, half-empty resort towns, and the surrounding coastal areas, contain a myriad of characters who gather, from transvestites to Latvian pole dancers, amateur wrestlers, fruit pickers, skinheads, and dinner ladies.
The area has a faint air of melancholy, with a certain delicious type of English-ness that I feel attracted to and compelled to document.
Love Bites is a look at people’s lives in a strange landscape, capturing a moment with empathy as well as ambiguity.
A sense of realism is shared throughout all my projects, with the finishing touches and style leaning towards the cinematic, taking cues from realist filmmaking, such as Pawel Pawlikowski’s Last Resort, Andrea Arnold’s Fish Tank and Wim Wenders’ Paris, Texas.
